The Principle of Identity: Every person needs to feel like they belong, have a sense of identity, and know who they are. People personalize their smartphones to feel distinctive, which explains why wallpaper-related applications and websites are so well-liked.

People collect medals and trophies for this reason—to feel valued and acknowledged. People establish friends in order to feel connected to others.

A similar thing happens with brands — people like associating themselves with brands because it gives them a sense of identity. “I prefer products from Google, so only Google Pixel and Google Home for me”. “I prefer coffee from Starbucks, so no Dunkin Donuts”. “I wear only Nikes”.
