Today is the 10th anniversary of the announcement of the discovery of the Higgs Boson Higgs Boson is one of the greatest & won't be wrong to say expensive discoveries in the field of science Let's first understand what Higgs Boson is

Higgs Boson is the basis for many observations & postulates that scientists proposed throughout these years. It was never discovered until July 4, 2012, & the scientist had to take faith in its existence for the existence of their theory. That is why it's also called the God particle(though your news channel might have proved the existence of God using this)

Higgs Boson is the reason why any particle has mass. Initially, scientists had to believe that a new field exists everywhere that gives particles their mass & this field was called Higgs Field - It's named after the scientist Peter Higgs who proposed it in 1960. But the way the Higgs field is defined it would be virtually impossible to observe it.

It was later until scientists realized that if the Higgs field exists then its action would require the existence of the corresponding carrier particle which was still hypothetical & was called the Higgs Boson. So no particle has any mass until it passes through the Higgs Field & the carrier particle Higgs Boson gets attached to it

One can better understand it through an analogy, the way the light refraction through the prism & get separated into different colour due to the variation in wavelength. In the same way, anything going through Higgs Field & Higgs boson getting attached to it makes the mass symmetry of matter asymmetrical & we are able to observe its mass

But it was still difficult to discover this particle since it has a mass of around 120 times that of the proton & an extremely short lifetime (10-22 seconds).

To observe the Higgs Boson scientists needed an instrument that could smash the large number of protons moving with the speed of light & break these particles into their fundamental constituents - The large Hadron Collider

Then on this same day 10 years ago CERN announced that they found the evidence of existence of the Higgs Boson
